Overview

The HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that employees’ and other assigned individuals’ protected health information (PHI) remains confidential. The HIPAA Coordinator will also handle complaints regarding potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a neutral, confidential point of contact for employees, patients, plan participants, and other assigned individuals with the need to provide, request, or otherwise transfer PHI.
  • Fields and responds to (when able to do so) questions, concerns, and complaints regarding PHI security and HIPAA compliance; escalates complex questions and complaints to the appropriate legal or HIPAA compliance staff.
  • Ensures that PHI of employees, plan participants, patients, and/or other assigned individuals is maintained and transmitted in a secure and legally compliant manner.
  • Assesses and when permissible, processes requests for PHI.
  • Receives and documents complaints concerning possible security breaches; escalates for further investigation as appropriate.
  • Investigates possible data breaches or losses; evaluates and recommends appropriate solutions.
  • Advises and assists all departments with HIPAA compliance.
  • Identifies and assesses compliance risks and concerns.
  • Works independently and with little supervision
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Performance Area 1: Organizational HIPAA Compliance

  • Organizes and facilitates organization’s HIPAA training
  • Assures staff has attested to training
  • Assures staff has attested to reading HIPAA policies and procedures
  • Gathers, develops and or provides BAA’s to vendors as necessary
  • Assures BAAs are maintained and updated
  • Follows up with Staff and Vendors as needed to obtain and execute BAAs
  • Manages and follows up with vendor BAA questionnaires as needed
  • Acts as librarian for approved HIPAA P&Ps
  • Ensures HIPAA P&Ps are updated and conform to organizational and legal requirements
  • Ensures updated HIPAA P&Ps are approved through organizational channels
  • Generates and maintains remediation plans
  • Ensures remediation plans are cross referenced to HIPAA P&Ps and their appropriate section
  • Works with appropriate staff to execute remediation plan
  • Conducts regular audits to maintain HIPAA program integrity and compliance
  • Manages HIPAA Compliance hotline and inputs any reported incident information into The Guard
  • Manages HIPAA incidents
  • Works with appropriate staff to resolve incidents
  • Maintains incident information and makes information available as requested by approved users

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree (preferred)

License/Certification:

  • Possess a valid Driver's License 
  • Must obtain and maintain vendor and industry certifications as directed

Prior Experience:

  • Two years of experience with HIPAA privacy and security requirements (preferred)

Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of the requirements of the HIPAA privacy and security rules.
  • Extensive knowledge of the organization’s health plan and health information policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

The pay range for this non-exempt position starts at $27.95 an hour. Our salaries are dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience.
